LEAGUES & CLUBS

Major League Soccer (MLS)

Division I

MLS is the top division of professional soccer in the United States and Canada, operating teams  across the Eastern and Western Conferences.

MLS launched in 1996 with ten clubs and a clear goal: make professional soccer work in North America. The league survived its early years, expanded steadily, and now runs 30 clubs across the United States and Canada. It is the highest tier of the American soccer pyramid and the entry point most new fans encounter first.

It is not the whole picture. American soccer runs across dozens of leagues and hundreds of clubs, from the second division down to regional amateur competitions in every state. This page covers MLS as a structure. The broader map is linked throughout.
